Project Summary
ak|a were commissioned to design a small scale housing development near Tarves in rural Aberdeenshire.
A redundant piggery was considered no longer appropriate for modern farming practice. This was replaced by four new dwellings utilising a simple palette of natural materials including drystone walling, larch cladding and slate roofing.
The forms and details were established by studying the vernacular buildings of the surrounding area.
The overall objective was to provide well designed, timeless dwellings with a real sense of place.
Youlieburn showcases highly sustainable dwellings which sit well in the landscape and are positioned to give fine open views in a number of directions.
