Project Summary
Rich in character and quirks, ak|a have designed a fascinating four bedroom family home to reflect and respect the authenticity of this historical site. The stepped arrangement of the house endorses the existing topography of the site, working harmoniously with the change in level, to serve the public living spaces on the upper floor with natural daylighting and long range views, whilst endeavouring the bedrooms on the lower floor with privacy and peace.
The existing stone walls have been maintained where possible, to retain as much of the site’s original identity, in turn providing an abundance of rare features and interesting details throughout The Mill. A selective palette of timber, stone, slate and render expresses a simple reflection of the local vernacular and natural materials used in the area.
